What is Endodontics and why do I need it?

Endodontics, or endodontology, is the specialty within Dentistry that deals with the treatment and prevention of diseases of the dental pulp and the supporting structure of the tooth. Endodontic treatment is often referred to as root canal treatment and is carried out when the nerve inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The root canals within the tooth are located and cleaned out to remove all dead and infected material and then they are filled to seal up the tooth.

Why have I been referred?

Endodontics (root canal treatment) is one of the recognised specialties within dentistry. A specialist endodontist is a dentist who has undertaken the equivalent of three years full-time postgraduate training which has been vaildated by the General Dental Council before they are allowed to use the title of specialist.

Although all dentists have training in endodontics as part of their undergraduate degree, more complicated cases, where the root canals are difficult to find, very thin, or curved require someone with specialist skills and knowledge to undertake the treatment to get the best result possible. Alyn is one of a very small number of dentists working in private practice who is on the GDC specialist list for Endodontics so you can rest assured that the treatment you need is being carried out someone highly trained and qualified to do it

Does it work?

Root canal treatment is a very successful procedure with success rates over 90%. Before starting your treatment Alyn will discuss the prognosis of your tooth with you as this varies depending on a number of factors.
